This cottage is on a scenic Vermont lake, surrounded by some of Vermont's most beautiful countryside. It's a lovely spot for fishing, swimming, and canoeing. The lake frontage comes right up to the cottage deck, which is right out the front door, so there's a great view of the lake from both inside and outside. The water is shallow but good for swimming. The owners provide a canoe, kayak, and rowboat.

The cottage is a short drive from Smugglers Notch, best known for skiing in winter but also a four-season resort area. You can also tour the local winery in nearby Cambridge, visit the corn maze, ride a horse from the nearby stable, or drive a little farther to enjoy Vermont's many other attractions, some of which are listed on our Vermont Links page.

The cottage is owned by our friends, Audrey and Tom, who have authorized us to take reservations. Rentals during the summer peak are weekly, Saturday afternoon to the next Saturday morning, but shorter-term rentals are sometimes possible during the shoulder seasons.

The maximum capacity of this cottage is eight people.

Sleeping Quarters & Living Space

The cottage has an attractive and unique decor that features recycled materials from local Vermont barns and homes. It is a two-story structure with a conveniently laid-out living and dining area and a well-equipped kitchen. There are three bedrooms—one downstairs with a double-size bed, and two upstairs. One of the upstairs bedrooms has a queen-size bed, and the other has two twin beds. The layout takes maximum advantage of the location right on the lake, with big windows on the lake-side both downstairs and up.

The bathroom is downstairs, and includes a toilet, sink, and walk-in shower.

The lake-side door opens up onto the deck, which is right on the lake and features a picnic table, chairs, and a gas grill..

You will arrive in a welcoming environment, with all furnishings, linens, dishes and cookware ready for your use. Basic condiments are in stock, plus a beginning supply of breakfast foods for your first morning after arrival. There is a convenient and accommodating general store in nearby Cambridge for grocery shopping.

A WiFi Internet connection is provided. At this time, the cottage does not have television reception, but a television set is provided with a VCR and many tapes, as well as many board games.

A land-line telephone is provided. We do not make the telephone number public on our Web site, in order to protect guests from unwanted calls. However, if you make reservations and want the number to give to family and friends before you leave home, we will, of course, be happy to provide it.

Pets are welcome, as long as they are kept under control by their owners. Please do not bring pets that may disturb the neighbors, either with noise or physical threats. If your pet causes damage to the property, you will be expected to assume full responsibility and pay for repairs. There is a local leash law for dogs.

Smoking is strictly prohibited in this cottage.

Rates, Reservations, and Cancellations

The weekly rate for the peak summer season (July and August, including weeks that overlap into those months) is $950 per week. All reservations are for the full week, unless there is a rare last-minute vacancy.

The rate for the shoulder seasons is $825, also for Saturday-to-Saturday weeks. Preference is always for full weeks, but during these times, if dates are open within two or three weeks of the time of the reservation, less-than-a-week rentals are available at $135 per night, minimum of three nights. All rates are subject to Vermont's 9 percent tax.

Reservations may be secured with a nonrefundable minimum deposit of $100, payable by credit card or check. For multiple weeks, the deposit is $100 per week. We ask that you not make reservations until your plans are firm. Once a reservation is confirmed, we no longer make those dates available, so we turn down anybody else who inquires, and lose other opportunities for rental.

Check-in is any time after 3 p.m. and check-out any time until 10 a.m. There is sometimes some flexibility in this, depending on the schedules of guests who have reserved the dates before and after your visit.

The prices include all utilities (electricity and telephone, although we request reimbursement for long-distance calls). A plentiful supply of clean sheets and towels is provided.

If you secure reservations with a credit card, our usual procedure is to charge the balance to the same card, no more than a day before your scheduled arrival. If you prefer to pay by check or another card, let us know. It is easiest for us to do the bookkeeping prior to your arrival and have a receipt waiting for you. Therefore, if you pay the balance by check, we ask that you mail it to us using the following address:

Lisa Carlson
85 Upper Access Road
Hinesburg, VT 05461.

If your plans change and you decide to cancel, we will make every effort to find others to rent for that period. In some cases, we will be able to make arrangements at a reduced rate. Whatever rent is collected from others (minus the deposit) will be deducted from the amount you owe.

Reservations may be made by phone (802-482-2988 or 1-800-310-8320) or by exchanging e-mail with us at cottage (at) If you pay by credit card (as the majority of our guests do), it is usually most convenient to provide the credit-card information by telephone.

The standard rental agreement for our cottages is posted here.

To Pay Your Deposit On Line...

If you prefer to pay your $100 deposit on-line by credit card, we have set up a secure order form for that purpose. Click here for the on-line payment page. This will charge your account right away while you are on-line, so before doing so, please be sure to confirm the reservation by phone or e-mail. (If you order by phone, the charge will not be made until the reservation is finalized, and, if you'd like, we can plan to charge the balance to the same card when you arrive.)

Keep in mind that our credit-card gateway is designed mainly to take book orders for our home business. Therefore, it'll ask about a shipping charge; but choose the option for rentals that avoids the shipping charge. If anything gets confusing, remember that you can always make your credit-card payment by phone, at 802-482-2988 or (from most locations) toll-free at 1-800-310-8320. The phone numbers are secure land lines to our home office, and we answer during extended hours most weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
